Miracle at Six

(a very true story)

I grew up in a small rural south Georgia town. There were five of us kids and I am the youngest. Our house sat way back from the main road. There was lots of love and a great reverence for God in our home. Attending church was something we did every Sunday. There were no parks or places to go to have fun. But our dad borrowed a school bus and took us and neighborhood families to a Florida beach practically every summer.

My three sisters were somewhat older than me. Therefore, we didn’t have a lot in common and hardly spent time together. Because I was the youngest, I was exempt from chores and some spankings, which for me, was a good thing. I was told that my sisters had to take turns staying home from school because there was no babysitter for me. One of my sisters, to this day, admits she was mean to me because she couldn’t go to school.

I was, however, very close to my brother who was close to my age. We rarely had toys except at Christmas. So, we made good use of other things. Old tires, cans and even sticks brought lots of fun to us on many a day. We took walks down long country roads and discovered blackberries and plum orchards. I kept up with him no matter what he did.

Once while inside an old barn, we climbed to the top using an uneven wall. There was a wooden beam at the top which was the width of the barn. My brother used the beam as a tight rope and made it to the other side. Well, now it was my turn, and I scaled the beam and made it to the other side Not once, did I actually think I would fall. Looking back, I realize that I could have fallen and broken my neck (only by the mercy of God this didn’t happen)

I really loved my brother. He was a very special person in my life. And on one summer day, I found out just how special he was. The sun was shining over an open sky. While we were playing outside, as we often did, my brother asked me a very strange question. He asked if I believe that he could make it rain. I looked at him in shock because of this peculiar question. I told him that I did not believe he could make it rain. But, somehow, I felt because he brought it up that he was about to do something about my unbelief.

Then what happened next will forever be etched into my mind. He looked up toward the sky and said, “Let it rain”. Immediately and I mean immediately it started to rain. It was like a soft April shower. The sun was still shining bright and there were no clouds in the sky. I was dumbfounded! All I could say was, “How did you do that?”

He didn’t answer me but ask yet another question. He said, “Do you believe I can make it stop? Now after you’ve seen one inexplainable thing, you’d think it would be easy to believe more of the same. But my response was, “No. I do not believe you can make it stop!” He then said as he looked up at the sky, “Let it stop.” Immediately, the rain stopped. Needless to say, I was in shock. I knew what I’d seen but could not believe it.

Now after the rain stopped, my brother said, “If one of our sisters (who he named specifically) comes out and asks if has rained, you say no.” As soon as he got those words out of his mouth, that sister who he’d named came out on the porch and asked if it had rained. I told her no as by brother had asked me to. She didn’t press the matter and went back into the house.

I tried to get my brother to tell me how he made that happen but got nothing. I knew he couldn’t have done anything himself to cause it. He was there with me the whole time. We had an old water pump and no water spickets. I knew what I’d seen was real because water was all around us coming down from the sky.

When we got much older, I asked my brother about that day. He told me that it was that he just believed He could do it. I now know that it was just his child-like faith. He was only 10 years old and I was six when that happened. Years later, I told my sisters this story and they did not believe it and still do not believe it to this day. The sister who came outside on the porch doesn’t even remember coming to ask if it had rained.

I have off and on questioned why God allowed me to see that miracle. As an adult, I have gone through some really hard times. I have to come to understand that God allowed me to see that so that I can recall that moment when trouble comes my way. Each time I revisit that in my mind, I am reminded that God can do literally anything if only we have the faith of a child. My faith in His supernatural ability has given me victory time and time again.

I can imagine that this is a hard to believe story. But it really happened! God is still performing miracles. We just need to provide one ingredient: child-like faith! Remember Jesus did say, “All things are possible to him that believe.” I challenge you to believe for the impossible and keep on believing until you see it come to pass. Then, you’ll see that God will honor your faith and show you His miraculous power as He did to me when I was only six years old and even to this day!
